UNIONDOCS PRESENTS: WELFARE

Frederick Wiseman’s WELFARE (1975) depicts the nature and complexity of the welfare system in sequences illustrating the staggering diversity of problems that constitute welfare: housing, unemployment, divorce, medical and psychiatric problems, abandoned and abused children, and the elderly. These issues are presented in a context where welfare workers as well as clients struggle to cope with and interpret the laws and regulations that govern their work and life.

We’re excited to be partnering with UnionDocs for this screening, which represents the opening night of their two-week intensive workshop, “Wiseman’s New York”. Produced by UnionDocs and hosted by Genevieve Yue, this program is an in-depth exploration of Wiseman’s relationship to his most revisited location: New York City. Across 10 days, Yue will guide participants through a survey of Wiseman’s New York films, alongside visits to the institutions, neighborhoods, and civic spaces they document. Throughout the program, Yue is joined by filmmakers, critics, artists, and community members whose work is in conversation with Wiseman’s films, from a range of perspectives. Through screenings, discussions, site visits, and conversations, participants will consider how Wiseman’s extraordinary attention to place, labor, and public life continues to shape documentary practice today.
