Dir. Curt Siodmak. 1941, 70 mins. DCP. With Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, Evelyn Ankers, Maria Ouspenskaya, Ralph Bellamy, Patric Knowles, Warren William, Bela Lugosi. Happy homecomings and family reconciliations take a ghastly turn when Larry Talbot is attacked by and kills a wolf during an evening out, though only a man’s body is found after the tragedy. The mystery deepens when Larry learns that this man was a werewolf, and now, when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright, he too will make the same transformation. The Wolf Man is the finest horror movie of Universal’s monster revival in the 1940s, celebrated for its spectacular makeup effects by Jack Pierce and Lon Chaney Jr.’s tortured turn in the title role.
