The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Dir. Jacques Demy. 1964, 92 mins. France. DCP. With Catherine Deneuve, Nino Castelnuovo, Marc Michel, Anne Vernon. One of the most exquisite romances ever filmed, Jacques Demy’s gorgeous, melancholy tale of young love thwarted by harsh reality is completely sung through to an unforgettable score by the great Michel Legrand. Deneuve commands the screen as the daughter of an umbrella-shop owner who falls hard for a sweet-faced young car mechanic, who is eventually sent off to fight in the Algerian War. Perhaps the tenderest film of the French New Wave, Demy’s lovely operetta is a triumph of cinematography, costume design, art direction, and music.

Tickets: $17.50 / $12 senior and students / $10 youth (ages 3–17) / free for MoMI members at the Senior/Student level and above. There is a $1.50 transaction fee per ticket for all online purchases. The cost of admission may be applied toward a same-day purchase of a membership.
