Seasons vanish mid-frame. A telephoto lens reveals a spirit dimension. A cross-species rebellion is sparked by instigators in plain sight.
Kelly Sears’ films traverse the uncanny terrain between documentary and speculative fiction. Using experimental animation techniques, Sears reconfigures archival and original imagery through collage and layering, opening portals to alternate narratives. Each frame becomes a site of possibility, where histories are reexamined and futures imagined.
This program spans nearly two decades of cutting, collaging, and merging thousands of filmic and photographic fragments into worlds at once familiar and fantastic. Kelly will be in conversation with writer, educator and editor Catherine Taylor following the screening.

The Lost Season [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]2023, TRT 6:09, US[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Earth is experiencing its final winter. A giant streaming company hires all available camera operators to document the last weeks of this soon-to-be-lost season. As the workers begin to view their footage as a form of ecological extraction, they refuse to further commodify climate collapse through their labor. The film was created from thousands of photographs gathered during weeks of walking through snowy landscapes in New Hampshire and eroding beaches in Florida.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text css=””]
Voice on the Line [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]2009, TRT 6:45, US[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Figures from archival films from the 1950s are recast in a large-scale secretive telephone operation, drawing on troubled relationships between the areas of national security, civil liberties, and communication corporations. The covert project in this film transforms from one of surveillance into one of discovery.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text css=””]
A Tone Halfway Between Lightness and Darkness [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]2015, TRT 7:30, US[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]A Tone Halfway Between Lightness and Darkness is an animated séance conducted through discarded 35MM photography books. These signs from a former life of a consumer photography format return as a meditation on spiritualism and the camera as a medium, using spirit photographer William Mumler’s story as a loose point of departure.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text css=””]
The Body Besieged [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]2009, TRT 4:00, US[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Animated instructional photographs from yoga and exercise books explore themes of possession that distort and mirror our daily routines. These bodies point toward haunted forces that may lie behind a broader sense of cultural unwellness.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_ro
