Dir. Alfred Hitchcock. 1963, 119 mins. U.S. 4K DCP. With Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Veronica Cartwright. Especially experienced on the big screen, Hitchcock’s boldly music-free master class in mounting and inexplicable dread feels properly apocalyptic, a film that begins as a romcom and ends as an unending screech from the void. Tippi Hedren’s cursed Melanie Daniels (swathed in an iconic pale green coat and skirt ensemble from Edith Head) is the glamorous centerpiece to Hitchcock’s existential horror classic, her brilliantly placid performance as eerily frightening as the squawking gulls that engulf her one horrible weekend in Bodega Bay.
