NINA HAGEN = PUNK + GLORY

Up until his untimely death earlier this year, filmmaker Peter Sempel had a long and close association with Anthology Film Archives and Jonas Mekas (about whom he made four separate feature-length film portraits over the years). In addition to his collaborations with Jonas, Sempel made numerous other experimental films and documentaries about various artists and musicians. Among his best-known works is this film about the legendary singer, songwriter, and actress Nina Hagen. Far from a conventional artist doc, NINA HAGEN = PUNK + GLORY favors spontaneous, fragmentary, and often home-movie-like glimpses of her daily life, performances, and interactions with family, friends, and colleagues (including Lemmy, George Clinton, Blixa Bargeld, Udo Kier, Dee Dee Ramone, Jonas Mekas, and others). Sempel’s goal is less to narrate Hagen’s biography than to capture her unique energy and charisma, and to shed light on her many sides, on- and off-stage.
