In KAMA SUTRA: A TALE OF LOVE, Mira Nair examines the stigmatization of sexually promiscuous and unmarried women by the upper class in 16th-century India. The film follows Maya, a servant, who embarks on a journey of self-discovery through the art and spiritual practice of being a courtesan. Though ultimately a film about love, as signaled in the title, the film presents a rare historical fictional account of the spiritual art of working sex in the 16th-century.
