In the Cut

Dir. Jane Campion. 2003, 102 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kevin Bacon, Sharrief Pugh. Oscar-winning director Jane Campion fashioned a highly unusual, evocative, and exquisitely shot erotic thriller that initially baffled audiences but now has come to be widely admired. Adapted from a novel by Susannah Moore, In the Cut stands apart for the way it creates unsettling cinematic tension by entering a woman’s perspective, telling the story of a schoolteacher and writer (Meg Ryan, in a performance of rare reserve and dramatic interiority) who becomes sexually attracted to a boorish detective (Mark Ruffalo) investigating a serial killer whose latest victim was found close to her home. Campion favors psychological interiority and subtle menace in this eerie tale of fear and desire.

Tickets: $17.50 / $12 senior and students / $10 youth / free for MoMI members. There is a $1.50 transaction fee per ticket for all online purchases. The cost of admission may be applied toward a same-day purchase of a membership.
