Dir. Martin Scorsese. 1995, 178 mins. 35mm. With Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci, James Woods, Don Rickles. Scorsese’s breathtaking epic about corruption in Sin City probes the minute details of casino operations and the larger scope of human betrayal. The film’s lavish spectacle—its flashing marquee lights, insider narration, dizzying quick cuts, and infinite rainbow of costumes—effectively reflect the characters’ emotions and confusion. In an Oscar-nominated performance of breathtaking force and vulnerability, Sharon Stone commands the screen as Ginger, a high-price call girl caught between the conditional affections of her husband, gangster Ace Rothstein (De Niro), and the machinations of psychotic Nicky Santoro (Pesci). As with GoodFellas, Casino was written by Nicholas Pileggi, based on his book.
